Sustainable and quality farming

Tenimenti Rossi Cairo is the project that includes two wineries La Raia and Tenuta Cucco, two experiences with a single intent: to invest in quality agriculture, which preserves the territory, for generations to come.

In 2003 Giorgio Rossi Cairo took over La Raia, among the Gavi hills in lower Piedmont, deciding to make it a biodynamic farm. It was a response to his desire to create a place that was harmonious in all its agricultural, landscape but also architectural, social and cultural components, with the establishment over time of a Waldorf-Steiner school, an art  foundation and a 12-room boutique hotel, Locanda La Raia.

La Raia covers more than 180 hectares, of which 50 are planted with vineyards. The native Cortese and Piedmont Barbera vineyards, cultivated according to the biodynamic method, are planted in limestone and clay soils. The grapes are hand-picked and selected on the vine, and the yeasts used are indigenous. Thus, and only thus, are born Gavi Riserva Vigna della Madonnina and Gavi Pisé.

At La Raia we also grow ancient grains, such as monococo spelt, raise free-range Fassona cows and produce three varieties of organic honey. The hectares not planted with vineyards are occupied by arable land, pastures, orchards, lakes, chestnut and acacia forests that form a unique ecosystem.

In 2015 Tenuta Cucco was taken over, with its Bricco Voghera and Cerrati crus, in Serralunga d'Alba, which has entered with its landscapes and vineyards on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Piero, the second generation in the winery, decided to introduce organic farming on these hills as well, and Tenuta Cucco has been a certified winery since 2018. In Tenuta Cucco's 13 hectares of vineyards, in addition to Nebbiolo da Barolo, Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba, Langhe Chardonnay and Langhe Nebbiolo are also grown.

The Additional Geographical Mention "Cerrati '' is among Serralunga d'Alba most famous crus, and its extraordinary vocation has determined the character of Tenuta Cucco's two historic products. The highest part of Cerrati has always been the most sought after and has been known since time immemorial as Vigna Cucco, already mentioned in 1971 in Renato Ratti's Carta Storica del Barolo. From this portion of the vineyard comes the Barolo Vigna Cucco Riserva, first released on the market in 1986. From the subsequent rows comes the Barolo Cerrati, marketed exclusively by Tenuta Cucco, from the 1996 vintage. Since the 2017 vintage, Barolo Bricco Voghera has been added to the range: the clay soils, which belong to the Lequio formations, and the northwest exposure give this wine structure freshness and elegance.
